Tiger Saw at HFA

Tiger Saw performed a set on the Phoning It In podcast this weekend. We performed a few songs, and in the spirit of theAll My Friends book, South ChinaThe Wailing Wall, and Moons of Jupiter (All members of the current Saw lineup),  each performed a Tiger Saw song as well.

The host, Nadav, who has put on a few memerable shows over the years, wrote of the session:

Dylan Metrano, Chris Holt (Moons of Jupiter), Mandy Sabine, Jesse Rifkin (The Wailing Wall), Jerusha Robinson (South China), and Jeremy Robinson (South China) phone it in from Portland, ME. As much a collective as a solo vehicle for Dylan, Tiger Saw’s seen over 100 members throughout its decade of existence (not to mention that Dylan and all those members each play in plenty of different bands). And to celebrate that decade, Dylan’s put together an oral history of the band, ‘All My Friends Are Right Here With Me,’ which comes complete with a CD of covers by friends and band members both past and present. In lesser hands, the thing would be an egotistical mess, except that Dylan is just so damned nice, one of the least ego-driven people you could hope to meet, and the results of any Tiger Saw project are never less than magical. From sleepy slowcore to exuberant singalong folk, downbeat or up-, Dylan’s songs are never less than hopeful and affirming, gentle reminders that there is hope, there is kindness, there is love.

A really nice blog, I Guess I’m Floating, is giving away an MP3 of our cover of Bonnie ‘Prince’ Billy’s song ‘Hard Life’. The track was originally recorded for a Will Oldham tribute record in 2004; released again on a Tract Records compilation in 2007; then again on the Tiger Saw odds-n-sods collection Ask Me Again in 2009. The song features Juliet Nelson, Christopher Holt, and Dylan Metrano.

Here’s what they say:

Tiger Saw are an interesting musical outfit, if not confusing. The group have one constant member (also the founder) in Dylan Metrano but fluctuate in size from bare-bones soloist to upwards of a dozen different musicians – including artists like Jason Anderson and Jesse Rifkin. I plan on featuring their original material in the future but for now this excellent cover of Bonnie Prince Billy’s “Hard Life”, featuring a beautifully composed male-and-female folk duet, will hold me over.

The post and MP3 are here.

Dylan Metrano’s book All My Friends Are Right Here With Me: A Decade in the Indie Rock Underground has been published.
Over a year in the making, All My Friends Are Right Here With Me is the story of the first decade of the indie-folk collective Tiger Saw. Based on a decade of tour diaries and dozens of interviews, it tells of a community of bands in this DIY, post-Nirvana era. It features first-person accounts of tours with Kimya Dawson, Castanets, Jason Anderson, Viking Moses, The Hotel Alexis, and more.
Part travelogue, part studio diary, and part oral history, All My Friends tells of an exciting time of collaboration, mutual inspiration, and perseverance in the ever-changing world of indie rock. It features detailed remembrances by members of Dirty Projectors, White Hinterland, Little Wings, Songs: Ohia, Tarentel, and many others.
The book also comes with an exclusive CD of Tiger Saw covers performed by their friends: Jason Anderson, Cake on Cake, Guy Capecelatro III, Moons of Jupiter, Annie Palmer, Picastro, Gregg Porter, Quiet Bears, South China, Strand of Oaks, Anna Vogelzang, The Wailing Wall, and White Hinterland.
The book is available to order exclusively through Burst & Bloom Press:

Tiger Saw will be touring in support of the book in October, with their friends South China, who are supporting their new album Washingtons, and The Wailing Wall. In addition to an evening of music, select shows will feature dramatic readings from the book, performed by a collection of home-made puppets. Dates are here.
If you’d like to set up a show or reading in your town, get in touch and we’ll set it up.
